The Pokanoket Tribe at the Rockwell School in Bristol, RI

Ten members of the Pokanoket Tribe presented their history and traditions to both third grade classes at the Rockwell Elementary School in Bristol, RI, on June 12, 2019, as part of a series sponsored by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. Click here for a 27-minute video of the event.

 

(Above) Sagamore William Guy talks about Princess Redwing, the last female Pokanoket Chief, before Running Deer and Rainbow Heart talk about turtle shells and other artifacts that they brought with them.

   

(Above) Little Feather leads the group in a traditional Pokanoket song, and students eagerly engage in a dance to the tribal drum.

   

(Above) Grayfox explains some of the items that he wears on his regalia to the students while the Sagamore shows them a war hatchet.
