The Pokanoket Tribe at the George R Martin School in Seekonk, MA

Four fourth-grade classes at the George R. Martin Elementary School in Seekonk, MA, participated in a presentation by members of the Pokanoket Tribe sponsored by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. Click here for a 24-minute YouTube video of the presentation.

 

(Above) Sagamore William Guy gave a history of the Tribe, including the Massasoit Osamequin, his son King Philip, Anawan and Weetamoo. One of the teachers shared that her father was Narragansett.

 

(Above) Running Deer led students in several dances to the accompaniment of the Tribal drum, known as the Heartbeat of the Pokanoket.

 

(Above) Heart Full of Prayer described how wampum is made from the blue and white portions of the local quahog shell and was used for money in colonial times.

 

(Above) Rainbow Heart and Little Feather shared a Native story about strawberries and led the group in a Native song before Tribe members and the Sagamore showed the students a number of items, including an arrow holster made from a coyote skin.
