Pokanoket Tribe helps to Celebrate Seekonk

Members of the Pokanoket Tribe gathered at the Seekonk Public Library on September 30th to help celebrate Seekonk at their annual Celebrate Seekonk Day event held at the Library from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Click here for a recording of the hour-long program that featured drumming, dancing, history and storytelling.

(Above) Sagamore Winds of Thunder and Sachem Dancing Star were greeted by event organizer Seekonk Cultural Council Chairperson Bill Clark before eighty-year-olds Lee “Brave Heart” and Harry “Hawk” Edmonds entered the room for the first performance.

(Above) Dancing Star offers a number of stories after Winds of Thunder relates the history of the Tribe. Later, the children are invited to participate in a round dance.

(Above) Audience members pose questions and watch She Walks with the Wind perform a traditional blanket dance before the drummers close out the ceremony.
