Dr. Weed meets with Somerset historians

Sowams Heritage Area Coordinator Dr. David Weed met with Town Historian Mary Ann McDonald, Historical Society Past President John Larsen, and his wife, Marybeth Rua-Larsen who is Head of Reference at the Somerset Public Library, on February 25, 2023. In the meeting, Ms. McDonald reviewed much of the pre-colonial and early colonial history of the Town, including what is known about the Indigenous population and their early dealings with the English Colonists in Plymouth. She is a key person in the Town as she is also on the Board of Directors of the Historical Society, the chairman of Friends of Somerset Historic Preservation and the Town’s Historical Commission, and she was excited to hear of the project.

“We are looking forward to continuing our work with them as we prepare a feasibility study to create a National Heritage Area in Sowams, the homeland of the Massasoit Ousamequin,” stated Dr. Weed. “John is a member of the Steering Committee for that project and is assisting us in adding the Town of Somerset as part of the proposed Heritage Area.”
