Mashapaug Nahaganset Tribe joins the Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy Annual Event

Members of the Mashapaug Nahaganset Tribe joined the Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy Annual Event on September 22, 2018 to help recognize the important role that the Hill played in the lives of indigenous people who occupied that land for thousands of years. Raymond “Two Hawks” Watson spoke at the event, saying “So Miantanomi came up here with Roger Williams and it is said that he stood here at this very spot, reached out with two arms, and said to Roger Williams ‘You can use the land between here,’ and if you look behind us, of course, right down the middle you will see what the lovely, lovely skyline of what is now Providence.” Tribal members then offered some words from Montauk Shinnecock Shawman “Red Medicine” before drumming for the crowd of about one hundred who gathered at the park on the top of the Hill.
